To the Hebrews of old the Name of God meant the Revelation of His nature. If we would know what God says about Himself it is necessary to study and consider His names as shown in the Word of God and find His character in them.
In Shakespeare’s play King Henry IV an enquiry is made “I would thou and I knew where a commodity of good names were to be bought”. The Bible provides a wonderful commodity of good names belonging to the Father for free!
So far we have considered 2 of His names, Elohim – God in trinity, creator, then El – the strong one. There are still many more.
ELAH or ELOAH means the Adorable one, this name appears first in the book of Ezra ch4 vs24 where it is used in connection with the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. ELOAH appears 90 times in the OT identifying Him with His people. It signifies the Adorable or worshipful one.This name stands for the nature and expression of the ONLY living and true God. In the KJV Bible it is rendered as ‘God’.
One of the most awesome passage in the Bible is in Job ch19 vs 25,26,27 where Job says “For I know that my redeemer liveth and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth and though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God- ELOAH whom I shall see for myself”. Hallelujah. He is the one I worship and adore. ELOAH.
Do you adore Him? In those quiet moments of prayer do you tell ELOAH that you adore Him. Oh tell Him so in thanksgiving, praise and worship before you make your requests known unto HIM, ELOAH.
It has been said that any blessing that is lasting is a blessing that is contained in some new discovery of God. For Abraham it was after his encounter with Melchizedek the sole priest of God Most High, EL ELYON possessor of heaven and earth. EL is the name of God. ELYON means Most High, most Supreme, the highest elevation, Him being the highest with none higher, within the word is the added idea of might and strength, the strongest strong one. This compound name reveals God as the high and almighty one who inhabits eternity. How reassuring it is to know that in this troubled age the ‘Most High’ ruleth in the kingdom of men (Dan 4:25).]
In Isaiah ch14 vs14 we find Satan saying ‘I will be like the Most High’ He wanted to be above God. He coveted God’s might and power and position. He wanted to be EL ELYON. But God said ‘Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit’. What pride and arrogance that Satan could think that he could exalt himself to that most high position. Without doubt his end is assured because of the price that Jesus paid on the Cross and our belief in Him that we have such a privilege to be counted among the children of the MOST HIGH.
So worship Him as there is non above EL ELYON. Hallelujah – such Comfort in the name that is above every name.
Now consider the name EL ROI – ‘the Lord that seeth me’. The only time this name is used of God is found in Genesis ch16. In this chapter is the story of Sarai and Hagar. Hagar fled into the wilderness of Shur away from Sarai’s persecutions – because Hagar had conceived and Sarai hadn’t she treated Hagar harshly. When Hagar could stand it no longer she fled with her child into the wilderness. The Angel of the Lord found her by a fountain of water !!! (Living water) He gave her words of encouragement and words of promise and sent her back to Sarai. The Lord’s word impacted Hagar so that she called that well EL ROI – meaning ‘The well of Him that liveth and seeth me’ (vs 13 & 14). She drank of that living water and stepped into a living relationship with the God of Abraham. How can we be sure of that? She called her son Ishmael. Ishmael means God who hears.
Do you believe that God sees and hears you ? There is a well of living water in this wilderness of Godlessness it is His word, the presence of His Holy Spirit, and His Son. Faith is the victory. Is He your EL ROI?
Dwell on these names of God as there is no doubt that He is the only one to adore, and His supremacy above all ensures that He hears us and knows us. Are you one of His
